In the past year we’ve gone on quite a few journées; I just checked and we’ve totalled up 2039 comments while dancing all over etymology, teaching English, supreme language geekness, Edulang’s efforts, and a fair amount of fun in between.  I’ve discovered so much about teaching from our online ELT community, just as I feel I’ve learned so much about myself AND again…   I HAVE YOU TO THANK FOR THAT, DEAR READER!!! wherever you are   I (…)

It is my honor to welcome a first guest post by none other than Phil Wade.  I’ve been crossing paths with Phil on twitter and the blogosphere the past few months and it’s been a true pleasure.  He offered to share his take on the use of English Addicts in a number of different contexts so without further ado, I give you Phil!  ——————   I’ve been interested in teaching with the news since I began my EFL journey. You feel bad if you haven’t blogged in a week, embarrassed if you haven’t in a month, and then hesitate to post again as you wonder what folks might say when you finally do blog again. 6. (…)

Ever thought of going freelance ? #etymology

thumbnail

If you’ve followed the blog for awhile, you’ll know that I’m an etymology junkie.  A few months back a buddy from Hamburg (who will remain anonymous… um… yes it was Mike) shot me an email with an etymology I hadn’t known and I’ve been waiting to share it ever since cuz it’s a goodie ! (feel free to challenge me with an etymology… I’m ALWAYS game for a hunt !)       “Freelance” was supposedly coined by Sir Walter Scott in Ivanhoe and it is a beautifully simple etymology; it is a warrior whose skills are available (…)
