Dogme Flies Unite ! #ff @chucksandy

During last week’s #eltchat about coursebooks and their value/imposition, a number of us were enticed by @chucksandy’s tweet about his dogme class.  A number of us buzzed in and told he we wanted to be “a fly on his classroom wall”.  Read more about it in the fun etymological/philosophical/DOGMatic post I wrote here.

Since then, many have continued to show interest, and Chuck has helped keep the ball rolling, commenting on that post with:

———————————-

“It’s been a week since the initial idea of playing / learning together first came up  on #eltchat so let’s take the idea forward while there’s still some “buzz” in the air. Though I’m really buzzed myself by the number of people who think it would be fun to be a fly on my classroom wall,  I really do think it would be more useful and fun to collaborate on something together and to do that in a sharing the dogme / embodying Genshai  kind of all in it together for the learning kind of way. To get started, let’s do this:

Would everyone who’s interested in getting involved in this project please do three things?

1)  leave a comment below indicating where you’re teaching / age group you work with.

2) send me an email to charnelsan mac .com with DOGME FLIES in the subject heading.

3) in the body of the email suggest at least one idea for  a collaborative student project.

I’ll then create a google.doc or equivalent with everyone’s ideas listed and invite everyone to join in and collaborate on this doc.  What I’m thinking is that we might then divide up into YL / Teen / Adult groups and work in our group to flesh out ideas. Once we get a few solid ideas put together, we can put those to our students who can then decide (maybe by voting?) on which of the projects they’d like to do.

The “project” can be very loosely defined and structured w/ only some samples of possible outcomes modeled (e.g. samples of a podcast / brochure / etc). Then it would be the getting there with our own groups (and maybe across groups) and the way we all share / collaborate / work / play together where the dogme-actics come in.

Thoughts?

Who’s in?

Chuck

So, if you are interested I’d encourage you to join us in step 1, 2, 3 above, starting with a comment below.  I’ll start :)   … oh and yes “Dogme freakin’ Rox”, and so does Chuck !

MERCI, dude  :)

I’m currently on a very limited visa in France which has not allowed me to work more extensively as a teacher.  No complaints because it took a long time to get that visa, and it means I’m in the same country as my love, which wasn’t the case 7 months out of last year.  All good now.

However, to keep my teaching skills honed, I’m volunteering weekly tutoring a 16-year-old chinese student (improving both his intermediate-level french/ and low-level english) and a french acquaintance, who is the community manager for la poste.  He’s in his forties, low-to-intermediate level.

I hope to be able to teach again in the classroom in the fall once the visa constraints lighten up after a first year in the country.

Can’t wait to hear from the rest of you all :)

Like Brad and for similar reasons, I’m not really in a position to contribute. It’s unfortunate, because I’d love to. I’m looking forward to what you can come up with!

Oh dear. Looks like there’s a trend. I really want to contribute but it’s all exams here at the moment. Start new job in July, so should be able to contribute then. Pretty sure I’ll be teaching adults, but could have a few teens. Not sure yet!

Exciting idea but have two major problems:
    * currently having finals at  the high-school (don’t teach much) and then SUMMER VACATION – no pupils at the high-school till Sept!
    * can only participate with a flexible definition of the project – with my deaf and hard of hearing students I adapt everything!

Bummer, would have loved to, but like Sandy, it’s exam season. Then come July I won’t have any students for a couple of months (summer break, and I will be reading A LOT). =(

Look forward to seeing if anything comes of this…

In response to you, Sandy, Naomi and James… BUMMER is right.  The interest is there, but the timing seems off for many.  Hopefully we’ll continue to hear from others, and if now’s not the right time, maybe launch something in the fall.  Merci 4 the comment, Mike.

September might be best – that’s when I’d be starting my research into dogme with my students. Would be interested to compare with anyone doing the same…

Fantastic to see so many fab teachers express interest in collaborating on something, so with that in mind we shouldn’t  let a little thing like summer stop us.  Therefore I’m going to give you a little summer homework:  keep this in your mind and encourage project  ideas  to bubble up. When they do, jot them down and share. Then when school starts up again for you, we’ll be ready to go. September / October would be a good time for me. In the meantime I’ll be thinking, too, and looking forward to doing some dogme collaboration with you all ^^ – Chuck

AWESOME.  I haven’t had homework in awhile now.  :)

Thanks for your ideas, direction and patience.  Cheers, b

Will be happy to jump in here. I’m based in NW Spain and am getting to grips with Dogme mainly with adults. This year I’ve been trying to teach a couple of young learner groups, which is really new to me.

great, alan.  glad to have you among our buzzing ranks.  we’ll make sure to keep the ball rolling on this :)
