Which do you think is better for #ESL students. Image 1 or 2?

Do you know what UX/UI stands for?

No… it’s not another buzz word, or ELT jargon just invented ;-)

I didn’t know either until I started hanging around cool geeky web designers!  UX is an acronym for “user experience”, and UI is “user interface” and both have a huge impact on how learners process the applications in front of them, and hence how well they learn.  Changes that are very subtle can actually have a HUGE impact…

So, today, I’d love your input on the spice that we’re thinking of changing in the UI on English Addicts.  Please click on the 2 pics below to see actual screen size (different than how they seem reduced to fit here) and the lil’ hint is we’re talking uppercase/lowercase and font.

Tell me which you prefer, which you think your students might prefer, OR even take it into class and ask them (as one stalwart supporter has already done).  Any other feedback on the UI is very, very welcome as well!

THANKS!  -brad

Number 2 by far for me! Much, much clearer and I feel younger and smarter as I read it. Thus, a much better UE.   :)

  • sue annan

Me too. I prefer the fact that the headers on no.2 are bigger, thus I can determine which article I need more easily. UI very important:-)

  • http://nihalyildirim.wordpress.com/ Nihal Yildirim

I would definitely go for the 2nd one. Easier to catch the main ideas and actually makes you wanna catch the main ideas :)

haha… thanks.  just double-checking did you click on the 2 photos because I agree as it is above the second looks better, but in actual screen size, i’m not so sold… to each his own!

Thanks, Sue!  Like, Mike, just double-checking did you click on the 2 photos because I agree as it is above the second looks better, but in actual screen size, i’m not so sold… to each his own!

Merci, Nihal!  Like, Sue and Mike, just double-checking did you click on the 2 photos because I agree as it is above the second looks better, but in actual screen size, i’m not so sold… to each his own!

After clicking on them both I am sticking with my original answer (though it doesn’t seem as dramatic).

  • http://blog.edulang.com/ Brad Patterson

nice.  merci 4 the input.  i think i like the first, but would like to see it in bold.  i wonder if the students would see it differently.  Cheers!

    Hi Brad,

So nice of you to ask your readers before taking a decision. This is trust!!! So, about your question: without clicking, the second one looks much better but in actual size I’d go for the first option. Images and written words draw equal attention and you take a look at both. In the second, fond size is quite big and the pictures are almost redundant I’m afraid ;-)

  • Vicky Loras

    Hi Brad!

I like number 2 more for the same reason mentioned above – the titles stand out more and are easier to find and read : )

    Hugs,

;-)  Thanks Sophia.  Always good to have feedback from the PLN, and an outside perspective is really important because when’s you’re designing or developing something, it’s not easy to look beyond one’s own efforts.  Cheers!  -Brad

Yes . I did click on them, and I still prefer no.2 :-)

    Hi Brad,
Gonna go against the current here – I like #1 best – though I agree bold would be an improvement.  I don’t like the capitalisation throughout in the headlines and they seem to be shouting out a bit too much – I’m not sure where the aversion to the capitals comes from though … it smacks of old-fashioned to me possibly?  the online newspapers I tend to follow  (e.g. The Guardian, El Pais) don’t use capitalisation throughout and I guess I’m being influenced by that as a default?
I wonder if those headlines might benefit from a different colour as well?  maybe picking up on the blue of “all lessons … ”  - just a thought!
good luck with the change :)

    hope life’s treating you well

I like the bold headline/title of the second with the not bold body of the first. (I did click on them to ge tthe whole screen.)

The heading being bold gets my attention, but the body not being bold seems to make it easier to read.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks Ceri!!!!

Life is well. Next week, surf’s up in the south of France. Hope you’re enjoying the spring as well.

I think we see eye-to-eye here and I’m going to ask the team to experiment with the blue lesson titles to see what it’d be like. You rock. Thanks again and have a dandy of a weekend!

Great, precise feedback. Thank you, Stephen!

    Hi Brad,

I like the font in the 1st better, it’s friendlier, softer, the 2nd font is more matter of fact, more formal. Yes, the bold headlines help to attract attention but all in all I don’t see much difference between the variants.

  • http://blog.edulang.com/ Brad Patterson

You’ve read my mind… ;-) All in the subtleties, and it’s a bit beyond me too, but at the same time, I know it does make a difference.

    THANKS, brad

You too – sun’s coming out here and there’s talk of a bit of body boarding later this afternoon (on baby surf but enough for me!)  :)

  • http://twitter.com/cerirhiannon Ceri Jones

Totally agree with you Baiba – the 2nd font smacks of dumbing down too possibly?  or am I reading too much into it?
    Love these design puzzles!

oooo… nice! I’m going to have to wear a wetsuit this next week. water’s probably pretty warm near you ;-) ENJOY !

  • http://twitter.com/naomishema Naomi Epstein

I prefer the first one. Can’t really explain why, just my reaction!
    Good luck with it!

  • http://twitter.com/seburnt Tyson Seburn

The second one is slightly more updated, so I’d go for it.  Otherwise, there doesn’t seem to be much different.

  • http://blog.edulang.com/ Brad Patterson

Thansk Naomi!  There doesn’t always need to be a “why”… gotta trust our instincts ;-)

  • http://blog.edulang.com/ Brad Patterson

“updated”.  what do you mean, Ty?

  • http://twitter.com/muranava Mura Nava

interesting you are asking a population not directly using interface?
i would go for 2nd screen as it seems more modern in the typeface? the first one reminds me too much of times new roman!
if i may throw a question your way Brad, have you seen the Audrey Watters Test? http://hackeducation.com/2012/03/17/what-every-techie-should-know-about-education/, would you answer any of the questions?

  • http://blog.edulang.com/ Brad Patterson

    Hey Mura,
Thanks for stopping by!  Would love to hear what you’re doing around Paris one day, but for now we’ll stick to the topic at hand.

Funny that you mention the “asking a population not directly using interface” as it was something that a team member at Edulang specifically addressed before I posted this.  At the same time, teachers do use the English Addicts interface for teaching and student tracking, so it’s still important to have their input as well.  Lastly, my hope was that a few teachers might take it into class to ask their students (and a few have which is cool).

Love Audrey Watters’s blog, and have followed what she’s right often on Edutopia as well.  Hadn’t caught that article, but boy did she assign some homework for Edtech developers.  Have already shared it with my team, and thinking about it myself now.  Thanks for the heads-up.

    Cheers!  -Brad

The check boxes on the left look slicker, for example.

  • http://twitter.com/seburnt Tyson Seburn

Funny you mention the title case in the titles, Ceri.  A couple years ago, we noticed books coming out of Europe lacked title case (sentence case was used) and we wondered if this was some new trend in Britain.  Since then, I’ve adopted it myself, though it’s still not common here.

  • Sylvie_guinan

This is funny…I found the heavy bold in the second a bit too powerful & intense – maybe it’s a male /female thing – then what will you do??

  • Sylvie_guinan

That’s what I meant. When you click onto full screen the second seems too strong.

  • http://blog.edulang.com/ Brad Patterson

We’ll have google detect the gender and then change it accordingly ;-)  Sure that’ll happen one day!!!!  WOW… the world moves fast.

  • http://blog.edulang.com/ Brad Patterson

    gotchya.  merci

  • http://blog.edulang.com/ Brad Patterson

    gonna look into that too!

  • http://iasku.wordpress.com/me/ Chiew Pang

Before you become “pesado” and ask if I’d clicked on them, the answer is YES and YES. I only need to be told things once ;) Not true. I mean, true that I’d clicked on them, not true that I only need to be told things once.

My answer? Most people seem to go for #2, is that right?

I prefer #1. Why? It’s cleaner. It has more spaces. Therefore, it will be less fatiguing. However if someone’s using a mobile phone to look at it, the 2nd format may be better. I don’t own a smart phone, so I won’t know too much, just my geeky intuition.

    Cheers my man!

  • http://blog.edulang.com/ Brad Patterson

pesado, huh… and i thought i was being claro ;-)

Merci 4 the feedback, Chiew!  No smartphone… how do you manage to function in the 21st century without one?  ;-)
